Google Buzz - Another Way To Be Social Online

Posted by administrator on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

This week, Google announced a social network of their own called Google Buzz.  If you use Gmail, you may have seen a new colorful icon next to your Inbox.  This new service let's you read up on what others in your Gmail contact list are up to and talking about.  You can write a message yourself and others could easily read what you're writing and reply back.  It's another opportunity to be social and be connected to your friends and collegues.

This new social network has sparked some discussion in our office this week.  Our main interest is learning how this and other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook can help our client's businesses.

The other day, I was brainstorming with a nice lady about her website she wanted to build.  After talking about design specifications, programming features, and other items, the discussion turned to marketing the website and the use of blogs and social networks.  She didn't quite understand the point in using social networks and had trouble understanding why it was important.  I can relate; I too didn't get how others would care to read my Twitter feed.  I recommend you take a little bit of time to learn about how to use these social networks to your advantage.

In the past, we all relied on e-mail alone to communicate with others on the web.  Now, there are hundreds of websites that give us more immediate and interactive ways to communicate with those we know (and don't know).  The opportunity for word of mouth to spread online is increasing.  You can learn a lot from listening to others on the web.  You can also more easily than ever share your ideas and contribute to others' discussions on the web.

Do you have a new product or service for your store?  Announce it on your social network.  Do you want to survey your customers to find their opinion about a business matter? Post the question on your social network.  Want to learn what your customers are intersted in and what they talk about?  Listen to their conversations on your social network.

What has your experience been with social networks?  What are your thoughts about Google Buzz and other networks?  Do you have a favorite?

  • I think Google Buzz will be very useful. I like the features that allow you to share content from Google Reader. In my industry, I want to be able to pass on important information and also see what others have found to be interesting.
