Real World Twitter Usage

Posted by administrator on Friday, January 22nd, 2010

A blog post about businesses that have actually used twitter might be insightful.  As this is twitter week, we've considered many businesses that used twitter for various applications.  I thought I'd share a few of them with you.

1. Announce Your Location

Many trucks that sell food from the streets (in my area, we call these taco wagons) use Twitter to advertise where people can go to find the truck that day.  Fans of the taco wagon check their twitter feed to find out where the wagon is today so they can go there to get their lunch! I also found this article interesting.

2. Customer Service

I was surprised to see that JetBlue (@jetblue), the airline, had over 1.6 million followers.  After reading a few pages of their twitter posts, I see that they're using twitter for a brilliant purpose: customer service.  They can talk about issues, take care of complaints, announce things (such as announcing that they need volunteers to help with the Haiti earthquake relief effort), etc.

3. Twitter-only Deals

Dell, the PC maker, boasts that it has made over $6.5 million from twitter.  Dell announces discount codes that are only available on Twitter.  People follow their twitter feed and nab great deals as they become available.  Many others do this too, such as my favorite computer parts store, Newegg.com.

4. Mingle Good Quotes & Buy Messages

One other company we studied was a pizza company in New Orleans (@nakedpizza).  They post good quotes from famous people on their twitter account and tie in their pizzas into the tweet.

5. Education

Others use twitter as an outlet to educate their clients.  Tell them what's happening, give helpful howtos, and links to good articles on the web.  This is Danemco's purpose in having a twitter account.
